Organization to declare the famine that occurred in Ukraine during
the 1932-1933 period as an act of genocide.
Markiian Lubkivskyi, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry's
press service, announced this to journalists.
We are presently holding the relevant bilateral consultations with other
countries in order to draft the relevant resolution, which is planned to be
presented for consideration at the fifty-eighth session of the General
Assembly of the United Nations Organization," Lubkivskyi said.
He noted that the session will open in New York in September.
He also noted that the Ukrainian parliament has held two special sessions on
the 1932-1933 famine.
"The recommendations of the Ukrainian parliament include that the Foreign
Ministry hold international events aimed at securing recognition of the
famine in Ukraine as an act of political genocide against the Ukrainian
people," Lubkivskyi said.
Kyrgyzstan's Foreign Affairs Minister Askar Aitmatov said on Monday that
Kyrgyzstan would support such a United Nations Organization resolution.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Ukrainian parliament declared the
1932-1933 famine as an act of genocide in mid-May.
According to various estimates, between 3 million and 7 million people died
as a result of the famine.
